After a brief phone call with a male lawyer in town, I was reminded of a telephone conversation that I had with an older (and much wiser) male lawyer.
I had practised for a year in Ontario and had just received my call in Manitoba (so fairly green – but also UNKNOWN within the legal community). I had a lititgation file with a Sr. lawyer from another town. We had never met and only spoke on the phone a few times.
This lawyer calls me regarding our mutual file and we come to an agreement on a small request that he had made. His response at the closing of our conversation……
“Well you are a fine girl, despite what the bathroom walls say about you.”
And readers, I think it is because I am a woman that he would even think to say something so rude.

Wow Nicole!!!!! Do I know this ass??????
Nah, Jenna this one is Manitoban.
Holay shit….I’m speechless. How demeaning, disrespectful, and unprofessional can a person be? Gender inequalities and shitty ass gender stereotypes are, unfortunately, a sad reality. Sometimes feels like we still live in a man’s (I use the word lightly and mean no offence to those men who know better)world.
Wow, what a shit thing to say.
Was he even hinting a joke in any way?? I mean, that sounds like a joke I would use amongst my own friends… but DEFINITELY people I know.
It was definitly a joke or an attempt at one anyway.
My point is that had he been talking to another male lawyer, it would never cross his mind to make such a crude joke/comment.
Talk about still being a “mans world” being a lawyer, we women are definitly trying to get into the “Old Boys Club”. When I was articling my boss told me that I would probably find it difficult to get a permanent job because I was a young newlywed who would soon be getting pregnant!
BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA – effer! I hated that effing effer. I flat out told him his comment was not only inappropriate and rude it was in direct violation of our law society’s Code of Ethics. He shut up.
