My 1st Day of High School

I honestly cannot remember my first day of high school, it was that long ago.  I can recall the time leading up to the start of high school and things that happened during the first few months… but the first day.  Not so much.

I vaguely remember the day that we registered for high school.  The very first time was a big deal.  If you wanted to have your locker beside one of your friends, then you had to register together.  That was just how it was done.  There was no picking out your own classes but at registration your class schedule was given to you.  We had about a week to figure out who would be in our classes before school started.  We had that entire day of registration to walk around the high school and find our class rooms and our lockers.

My locker was beside my friend, Christy, that first year of high school.  Our lockers were pimped out with all our books, binders, pictures and, of course, a mirror hanging on the inside.  We were cool like that.

You know the saying, “High school are the best years of one’s life“?  While I really enjoyed my high school experience.  I had a great group of friends.  I fell in love.  I learned how to drive. There are a lot of milestone memories that stem from high school.  It’s true, but those weren’t the best years of my life.  I am currently living the best years of my life.  But high school was fun.  Very little responsibility, lots of laughs, parties, homecoming floats and parades, Prom.  It was a time of discovery and drama.  It was when we sorta started to get a feel for who we were and who we wanted to be.  Who we wanted to share it all with.

It’s not without some sadness when I say that it’s all thanks to Facebook that I am able to see what many of my fellow students and friends are doing now.  After high school, I moved away.  Lost touch.  Moved on with my life and many of those friendships just faded. It’s sad how life can happen that way sometimes.

I loved school. I was lucky enough to experience an Amercian style school system as well as an English school system.
My first High School (well juniour high) was in the Cayman Islands. Although we didn’t have lockers, instead we literally had to carry everything around with us. It was fab. I wanted to do everything. I joined the school band, I joined the school steel pans group, i joined the choir, i joined the cheerleading squad, i joined the spanish club, and the drama club and the chess club (although fat lot of good it did, i still can’t play chess!), i’m surprised I even had time to learn! we had sports days, and dances, and concerts, and fairs and events. it was awesome.
Then I moved. to London. the other side of the world!
School was different. similar in places. like social studies in my old school was now called humanities. still no lockers, and not really any extra-ciricular activites. i joined the steel pan group at my new school, but there were only 3 of us so the closed the group down.
i picked up my instruments again, but gave up the languages. there was no chess club, or drama club, no band, and to the English, cheerleading was, well, American. (shrug)
there weren’t dances, or drivers ed.
but i still had fun. i made new friends, and we had a laugh. and got up to mischief.

we then got a new music teacher, and we put on cabaret shows every term, and we started a school newspaper, which only lasted a term…

but it was awesome.

I loved school.

I do remember my first day of high school, well I remember the end of the day. And I remember my outfit, lol. I moved from Winnipeg to East Selkirk about a week before grade 10 started and I knew not a single sole. I don’t remember what classes I was in or what I did at lunch but I do remember the bus ride home from school. I chatted with a few girls on the bus ride home who became my instant friends. I am still very close to one of the girls. They were great years but not the best years of my life… these are the best years of my life.

Oh, I remember the first day and it was anything but pretty, but neither was the rest of the year, or 4 years of it, in general. School for me sucked! That is why I have never had any desire to ‘Facebook.’

Anybody I want to keep in contact with, I have already done on my own. No class reunions for me, though it would be nice payback:)
