The One with the Nanny

I always believed that only Rich people had Nannies.  The ones who lived in huge houses with parents that were never home because they had impressive and demanding jobs in big impressive offices in the city.

This is just not true.

Case and point, our family has hired a Nanny.  We are not Rich. We have our share of debt.  We are home at a reasonable hour in the evening and we do not work in big impressive offices in the city.  We are a pretty average family.  We don’t take exotic vacations every year or travel the world (yet 😉 ).  We work hard to give our family a good life.

We had talked off and on for a few years about getting a Nanny.  The pros and the cons and the pros.  Then we found our current day care and never really gave it as much thought.  I would tease my day care by offering her a position in my home, but it was all in good fun.

Then we had a third baby and I went back to work.  It has been hard juggling it all.  Craig is a great help but even he will admit that the primary care of the girls rests on my shoulders.  Not because he doesn’t care or because he doesn’t want to help, but because he works about 12 hours each day (or more), he travels for work and I have spent more time at home with the girls by virtue of maternity/parental leave.

Plus, it really is true that men (at least most of them) are not so great at multitasking.  Craig worked from home on Monday and he had Quinn with him because she had been sick (the other two girls went to day care).  At the end of the day, he called me to ask me when I would be home.  When I asked “Why”, he said, “Quinn is fussy and she wants her Mom.”

In Craig’s defense, there are days when I am calling him begging him to get his butt home so I can have a mini break.

So our Nanny (I’ll refer to her as Nanny A) is starting on Friday and she will have three days with me at home to settle in and get to know where things are.  I keep going over this in my head.  I know this is the right thing for me, I just hope that it is the right thing for the girls.  I am sad to be leaving our current day care and all the friends that they have made there.  Their home has become a second home for my girls and it is bittersweet to be moving on.

oh wow, I can only imagine all the emotion with this, but I also think that a Nanny is a good idea for a family like yours. You are all so close and she can really become part of your family…and that will be GOOD for the girls. They will have social interaction with each other and be safe in your home. I will look forward to the posts about how it works out. Don’t worry, it’s a good choice, a good decision.

I think its a great idea! The kids will love just being able to stay home and the no fuss in the morning to get them of to daycare and you off to work. Not to mention you will probably find the girls not getting sick as much. Bonus! Good luck and Im sure everything will turn out:)

I think it’s a great idea. Especially with 3 little ones. I often wonder how the heck you get to go on the computer with your Rumour Mill blog. It’s a great way to track your children’s year of growing up. Something they will treasure. Hope you find someone who is trustworthy and enjoys children. Having workers come into my home to assist with Kayla was a big decsion for me. But, it has been very beneficial. It has it’s ups and downs but you always work things out.
