My Aunt died last week and my heart broke into a million pieces.  Not just for my loss… actually, not for my loss at all.  I immediately thought about my two cousins, her daughters.  My Uncle, her husband.  Two little boys, her grandsons.  And my heart broke into a million pieces.

Growing up in a big family meant that there was never a shortage of friends to play or fight with or Aunts and Uncles to love us or discipline us.  Growing up in a big family has a quality of awesome that I can’t explain.  It means going home and always running into someone who you are related to.  At different times in my life my big family has had moments of closeness (distance and otherwise) and moments of estrangement but despite distance of miles or distance of the heart our big family comes together when we are needed.

My Aunt died on Thursday September 6, 2012 and without hesitation the wheels were motion for as many members of my big family to travel to be with my cousins and uncle.  That’s what we do.  That is what we always have done.  That’s what I hope we will always do.  We sit together and we share stories.  We laugh and we cry… and it’s a reunion of sorts.

A bittersweet reunion.

More freedom than a field of flowers in the wind, more beauty than a sunrise after rain… Loved by so many, missed by all who carry her in their hearts and memories. Rest in peace my sweet Auntie Love always – Chelcii Bruyere

I am so sorry for the loss to your family and the world of your beloved Auntie.

I’m glad you are all available to comfort each other.
