Excuse This House – Happy Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day for me has changed since I have had children.

Growing up, it was just another day.  We bought Mom a card or a small gift, but I don’t really remember making any special plans for the day.  Everyone celebrates differently.

I love when the girls bring home from school their Mother’s Day craft or poem but I also just love spending time with my family.  It doesn’t have to be a large function or getting dolled up and heading out to a restaurant.  Each year is different and instead of feeling like my family needs to dote on me, Mother’s Day is a time for me to reflect on my own personal experiences as a Mother.  Mother’s Day reminds me to cherish these years with my children.  Even when the days are long and trying, because sometimes they are.  To take the time to marvel in the moment that our family is in.  That this year, Piper is playing basketball in our driveway, Davilyn has moved away from training wheels and Quinn is using a big girl bike.

To really just take it all in, because one day they will be all grown up and my house will sit in the silence of echos of the days they played here. Cried here.  Fought here.  And I don’t want to forget a thing.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all of you.

Excuse This House

Some houses try to hide the fact
That children shelter there,
Ours boasts it quite openly,
The signs are everywhere.

For smears are on the windows,
Little smudges are on the doors
I should apologize, I guess
For toys scattered on the floor.

But I sat down with my child
And we played and laughed and read
And if the doorbell doesn’t shine,
Her eyes will shine instead.

For when at times I’m forced to choose
The one job or the other,
I’d like to cook and clean and scrub,
But first I’ll be a Mother.
