To Me As I watch Summer Fade into another School Year

It’s almost here.  Another school year.  Our biggest one yet… all three of my girls are off to school.

No more nursery school or preschool.  No more 1/2 days.  No more day care or Nanny.

We have arrived.  At this milestone together.

I’m ready.

I’m not ready.

I’m ready.

My baby is ready.  She can’t wait for her school years to begin.  To ride the bus like her big sisters have before her.

I’m ready too.  I really am.

Except when I’m not.  Like this morning when I caught a glimpse of my baby.  Who isn’t a baby at all anymore.  She’s 8 and she’s 6 and she’s 4.

How did I arrive here so soon?

On the horizon of having three big girls living in my house.

It’s not cliche and it’s not a tag line.  The fact is that time goes by at a speed so fast, we don’t even realize it.

The days seem long but the years are short

The days of rocking an exhausted and cranky toddler are far behind me.  The diapers and midnight feedings are long gone.  Those years went so fast even though I swear those days were so long.  And they were.  Long and short.

Here I am, standing on the horizon of another school year and I am ready for it.  I am ready to send my girls off into the care of their teachers and company of their friends.  I’m ready for the independence that will come with a child in junior kindergarten, a child in grade one and my oldest in grade three.

Even though I may feel anxious as that big yellow bus pulls away from my home with my four year old on board.  Even though I may worry about hurt feelings and skinned knees.  Even though I will stand in the window and cry as I wave at all three girls, with their back packs on leaving for school.

I am ready.

So dear teachers, please know just how very special these beautiful girls are to me.  If you watch, you will see their funny personalities and their loving nature. Their big hearts and their many talents.  They love hugs (all three do) and giggles and they do so love to learn.  Please know how lucky you are that you get to spend your days with them.

I am ready… I really am.
