Month 119 – Letter to Piper

Dear Piper ~

Your hockey schedule is more intense than most of those in the NHL.  I wish I were kidding, but I’m not.  You play 6 out 7 days and have been doing this since September.  Some nights, you come off one sheet of ice just to go straight to another.  I thought you might be burnt out by now but you aren’t.  Not even close.  In fact when we do have a night off, you pace the house looking for something to do.  I tell you to rest.  Watch television.  Put in a movie.  You just can’t seem to relax.

You would hit the ice if you could, instead.

Your dedication this year has been unwavering.  A true inspiration.  You have not missed many games or practices despite your hectic schedule, being sick with a terrible cough that made exercise difficult for you and preparing for your Reconciliation and Eucharistic celebrations this year.  You have remained so committed to your teams and dedicated to hockey this winter and I could not be prouder.

You know that my encouragement to you is that you continue to work hard.  You drive hard every second of every shift on that ice.  You rest on the bench only between those moments on your skates.  You have to prove yourself every shift.  Every game.  It’s not up to anyone else, you have to go out there and work your hardest.  That is how you will be your best.

Magoo, I love you and I will stand behind you and encourage you as you chase this passion of yours.  And, if at the end of your Minor hockey career, you are done, it will have all been worth it.  For you and for me.  Every hour spent at the rink or in the car to get you there.  Every minute of volunteer time.  Every dollar spent on registrations, equipment and canteen food.  Every moment spent together.

It is worth it.

Mama loves you, Magoo.

Love Mama

I told him if he skated a little  faster, he could too.”
